Consequences of Sinning in Islam

By an act of wisdom, Allah Almighty has placed man in the midst of a number of instincts and inclinations, some inciting him to perform good deeds, others pushing him towards bad and sinful acts. Likewise, man has been endowed with a mental capacity with which he is capable of distinguishing the benefits of good deeds from the harm of ill consequences caused by sinful acts.

Thus, if we choose to give more weight to the inclinations of good, we would be among the righteous ones and would be happy in this world and in the Hereafter. If, on the contrary, we lean more towards the instincts leading to bad deeds, we would naturally be among the bad and unhappy lot.

The passages that follow will point out to us the ill-consequences befalling those who commit bad deeds, and their rewards in this world and in the Hereafter.

Allah Almighty says: “Indeed, those who earn themselves evil acts and become overpowered by sins are the companions of Hell where they will dwell forever.” (Sura 2: 81)

The Holy Prophet Muhammad said: “Those who look after the observance of Allah’s ordinances and those who transgress them are like two groups of fellow-passengers aboard a ship who drew lots over the use of the upper deck by one, and the lower deck by the other. As the lower deck passengers had to go the upper deck whenever they needed water, they wondered whether it would not be easier if they dug a hole to supply their portion without causing their fellow-passengers any damage. Should the upper deck people ever agree, everybody aboard the ship would perish, but, if they refused, everybody would remain sound and safe.” (Related by Al-Bukhari)

In the above quoted passages from the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah, we have seen how evil-doers are seriously ill-rewarded and how, if persisting in their misdeeds and do not repent, they will be punished by Allah on the Day of Judgment, as they will be part of the companions of Hell; while still in this world, they become so hard-hearted and wrong others.

Therefore, it is our duty to warn those evildoers against the ill-consequences awaiting them, and point out to them that their behavior may be as harmful to them as to others.
